Megakare Carbon Reduction Plan
CARBON REDUCTION PLAN FOR MEGAKARE LTD
Supplier: Megakare Ltd
Company registration Number: 12336356
In compliance with PPN 06/21
Publish Date: October, 2025
Introduction
Megakare Ltd is committed to supporting the UK’s climate change objectives by reducing its carbon emissions and working towards achieving Net Zero by 2050. As a healthcare provider, we recognise the significant impact that our operations can have on the environment, and we are dedicated to minimising our carbon footprint through a comprehensive and proactive carbon reduction strategy.
Commitment to Net Zero by 2050
Megakare Ltd commits to reducing its carbon emissions and achieving Net Zero by 2050. This ambitious goal aligns with the UK’s legally binding target under the Climate Change Act 2008 (2050 Target Amendment), which mandates that the UK reach Net zero emissions by 2050. To achieve this, we will implement a phased approach, focusing on energy efficiency, waste reduction, sustainable transport, and embedding environmental responsibility into our day-to-day operations. We recognise that healthcare services, particularly those that operate across diverse locations and are reliant on energy-intensive equipment, face unique challenges. However, we believe these challenges present opportunities to innovate and drive positive environmental change.
Carbon Footprint Baseline Assessment
Our current carbon footprint is measured based on Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 emissions:
Scope 1: Direct Emissions
Direct emissions from activities owned or controlled by the organisation, including:
●Fuel consumption: Gas and heating systems in our buildings
●Organisation’s vehicle fleet
Scope 2: Indirect Emissions
Emissions from the electricity purchased for our operations, including:
●Electricity used in supported living and homecare properties and office locations
Scope 3: Other Indirect Emissions
These are mostly emissions from the broader supply chain, including:
●Staff commuting and business travel
●Waste management (including waste disposal and recycling)
●Procurement of goods and services
●Water use (indirect emissions associated with water production and treatment)
●Supply chain emissions, including transportation and production of goods and services.
Current Baseline for 2025
●Scope 1 Emissions (Direct): 200 tCO₂e
●Scope 2 Emissions (Indirect): 300 tCO₂e
●Scope 3 Emissions (Indirect): 400 tCO₂e
●Total Carbon Emissions: 900 tCO₂e per year
Emissions Reduction Targets
Megakare has committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2045 and has set the following interim targets:
●By 2025: Reduce emissions by 10% compared to baseline emissions.
●By 2030: Reduce emissions by 40%.
●By 2040: Achieve an 80% reduction in carbon emissions.
●By 2045: Achieve Net Zero emissions.
These targets are designed to contribute to the UK Government's overarching goals for a decarbonised healthcare sector by 2050.
Annual Reporting
Megakare Ltd will calculate and report its emissions for all three scopes annually, following the principles of the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol. This will allow for transparent tracking of progress toward Net Zero. The annual carbon reduction report will be shared with stakeholders, including clients, staff, and regulators, and will provide details on:
●Total emissions for Scopes 1, 2, and 3.
●Progress against emissions reduction targets.
●Any changes to the methodology or assumptions used in emissions calculations.
Verification of Emissions
To ensure the credibility and accuracy of our emissions data:
●We will conduct independent third-party audits of our emissions data to verify the figures.
●Our approach will align with internationally recognised standards such as ISO 14064-1 for greenhouse gas accounting and verification.
CARBON REDUCTION INITIATIVES
Operational Changes:
●Energy Efficiency in Facilities:
a.Conduct annual energy audits to assess energy consumption and identify opportunities to reduce energy use.
b.Implement renewable energy solutions (e.g., solar and wind power) wherever possible.
c.Upgrade lighting systems to LED lights and install motion sensors and smart meters to further reduce electricity consumption.
●Paperless Operations: Transition to a paperless environment, reducing paper use across administrative tasks and healthcare records.
Transport:
●Electric Vehicles (EVs):
a.Transition to a fleet of electric vehicles (EVs), prioritising hybrid or electric cars for essential business travel.
b.Implement route optimisation software to reduce unnecessary journeys and minimise fuel consumption.
c.Electric Scooter Scheme: Encourage employees in urban areas to use electric scooters for short-distance travel.
●Public Transport and Carpooling: Promote public transport usage among staff to reduce the carbon impact of commuting. Where possible, encourage carpooling.
Supply Chain & Procurement:
●Sustainable Procurement: Partner with suppliers who share Megakare's commitment to sustainability. This includes purchasing eco-friendly office products, medical supplies, and energy-efficient appliances.
●Sustainable Product Design: Work with suppliers to ensure that products (e.g., medical devices, office furniture) are designed for longevity, repairability, and recyclability.
Waste Management & Recycling:
●Waste Reduction and Segregation:
a.Increase efforts to segregate waste at all facilities into recyclable, hazardous, and non-hazardous categories.
b.Implement composting programmes for organic waste, particularly from staff canteens.
●Sustainable Disposal: Partner with certified waste contractors who comply with the Waste (England and Wales) Regulations 2011 for responsible disposal methods.
Staff Engagement & Training:
●Sustainability Awareness: Conduct staff training to educate employees about energy-saving practices, reducing waste, and adopting sustainable habits both at work and at home.
●Sustainability Communications: Run internal campaigns to raise awareness about World Environment Day and other environmental initiatives, encouraging staff to actively participate.
Scope 3 Emissions Management
Scope 3 emissions represent the largest portion of Megakare’s carbon footprint and will be managed through the following actions:
●Employee Commuting and Business Travel:
a.Implement systems to track commuting emissions and encourage staff to use public transport or carpool whenever possible.
b.Promote virtual meetings to reduce the need for air travel, and incentivise employees to use public transport for business-related trips.
●Engaging with Suppliers: Work closely with suppliers to reduce emissions from procurement, transportation, and product lifecycle emissions.
Monitoring and Reporting
●Key Performance Indicators (KPIs): Establish KPIs to monitor energy consumption, waste reduction, and carbon emissions across our operations.
●Annual Reports: Megakare Ltd will publish a detailed carbon reduction report at the end of each fiscal year, summarising progress against targets and outlining steps for continuous improvement.
●Verification and Auditing: Independent audits will be conducted to verify emissions data and ensure transparency and compliance with national reporting standards.
Declaration & Approval
This Carbon Reduction Plan has been reviewed and approved by Megakare's Board of Directors. We will continue to refine and update our strategies, ensuring that we remain on track to meet our Net Zero goals by 2045.
